Chocoholics! You’re in for a planet-lovin’ treat!

Hands up who wishes they could eat chocolate spread all day – just spooning it out the jar and straight into your mouth? If you’re hand isn’t up we cannot be friends anymore. We’re sorry, it’s over.

Just kidding! It is of course entirely your choice how you spend your days and which food you’d rather be spooning into your face. But maybe you do wish you could and maybe your love of planet, people and animals has prevented you from thus far achieving this dream.

Look no further we have you covered.

Introducing the delectable, the divine and the decedent – Bonsan Absolutely Vegan, Organic Choco Spread – and its delicious sister – the Mylk Hazelnut Cocoa Spread, basically a vegan n*tella. You lucky lot.

With our totally vegan and cruelty-free chocolate spreads you can now dedicate your day to devouring your way through jars of this heavenly treat. Or you could use it in one of the tasty recipes we’ve created. Or just spread a dollop on your toast in the morning.

Either way, you can spread safe in the knowledge that a) chocolate is very good for you (yes really, see below) and b) the planet will not suffer because our choccy delights contain no palm fat. You’re welcome.

Chocolate is good for you.

Let’s chat phenolic antioxidants. These are plant-based protective chemicals and, believe it or not, cocoa has more of these antioxidants than most foods. Yum.

What do these antioxidants do? We’re very glad you asked. Amongst other things, they’re anti-inflammatory and fight off bacteria, may reduce the risk of diabetes and have ‘beneficial effects on satiety, cognitive function, and mood.’  What’s not to love?!

Of course, the higher the cocoa content the better (e.g. darker is best) and it’s probably best not to indulge in chocolate all day every day, but the fact that we’re bringing you a vegan chocolate spread and once again widening the vegan repertoire is news enough to take a break and indulge in a sweet little somethin’.

(Our) Chocolate is good for the planet

Not all chocolate products are made the same. Many chocolate products contain a form of palm oil and, with palm oil as one of the world’s most unsustainable industries, we’re avoiding it in our chocolate spreads.

What is palm oil?

In case you’ve been sleeping on this issue, palm oil is the product that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees and it’s used in an endless list of products, from shampoo to your average chocolate spread. And why? Well, here’s how palm oil became so popular:

  • It’s tasteless and odorless, making it the perfect secret ingredient
  • It’s semi-solid at room temp, which is great for spreads and butter products
  • Products last longer thanks to palm oil’s oxidation resistance
  • Stable at high temperatures
  • Glossy, giving lipsticks and other cosmetics a smooth texture

When the cons outweigh the pros

However! Here’s just a few, rather poignant, reasons why the overuse of palm oil is a destructive and serious issue:

“Palm oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. This forest loss coupled with conversion of carbon rich peat soils are throwing out millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. There also remains some exploitation of workers and child labour.”

Suffice to say we’re pretty happy not to be using this divisive and controversial product in our lovely, smooth, nutty, moreish, indulgent, gooey chocolate spreads.
